With each country handling the crisis in their own way, who knows which is the right way. I have certainly found myself comparing each country's actions over the recent weeks and I am sure I am not alone.
As we find ourself in the fourth week of lockdown here in the UK, with at least another three ahead of us before our next update, people are starting to adjust and adapt to what can only be described as a new norm.
We have seen communities pulling together to support one another and local businesses, there has been an eruption of rather amusing and entertaining video on social media, families are forced to spend time together, more and more people are exercising and businesses are seeing both sides of the coin with some thriving and others failing.
No matter how we look at it, we are all evolving and changing.
None of us could have ever predicted how we would respond in the event of this pandemic, because none of us ever really expected anything of this magnitude to manifest during our lifetime.
Like grief, there is no right or wrong way to deal with the events of today, only the way that feels right for you. We all handle both differently - some bury their head and opt for solitude, others choose to exercise, some turn up the music and dance and there are those who crave company. Either way, it is important to know there is no right or wrong way, it's whatever way works best for you to keep your mindset at an elevated level and in a positive state.
I have experienced many life changing events myself over the years and have probably used all of the above coping mechanisms at some point, but in recent times I have also added in a few extra tools to help me along the way.
Here are just 5 to help you along the way:
1. Journalling - it doesn't necessarily have to be deep and meaningful, but share your thoughts of the day. How did I feel when I woke this morning, what have I eaten today, what activities have I done, who did I speak to and how do I feel now as I lie here in bed?
2. Exercise - again, it doesn't need to be ott, but try and get some fresh air, get the blood pumping around your body, dance, do yoga. Whatever you do, choose something that makes you smile and you enjoy rather than something that feels like a chore.
3. Talk to others- solitude can be soul destroying, it can be all too easy to focus on the things in life that pull you down rather that being aware of the things that can indeed lift you up.
4. Be Creative - now I am not the most creative of people, however what I have discovered is that I quite enjoy colouring. Find an activity that opens up your creative mind, it could be making, baking, dancing, music, arts or crafts - there really is something out there for all of us.
5. Meditation - we have a tendency to over complicate mediation and think there is a special technique, but I promise, there really isn't. Even if you can just take yourself somewhere away from the noise, listen to your heartbeat, feel the rise and fall of your chest with every breath you take and take time for you to either empty your mind or for reflection, I assure you, that is you meditation time.
In recent weeks I have also found myself falling in to a routine, something I have not had for many years. This in itself has had somewhat of a calming effect on me.
Monday to Friday I work, speaking with clients over video, working on personal development & adding new services to my business as well as exercising on a daily basis and weekends are my family time, With three of in the house all doing our own thing I find it quite amusing that we see very little of one another between the hours of 9am and 5pm, especially as we don't live in the largest of houses.
As a Hypnotherapist and Personal Development Coach I work with clients from many different backgrounds, each looking to either create change or for a resolution. When we have someone independent, non judgmental and objective to work with it helps us to discover the answers buried deep within our personal archives.
We all posses the tools we need, sometimes we just need a helping hand to get to grips with them.
So remember, although you may not currently control the events that surround you, you are in control of you and your own happiness. You may perhaps feel at times that you're not in control but this is only ever temporary.
